HWHC: 1 vs Uni of Birmingham: 0
It was a perfect day for hockey as the sun shone down on Hampstead & Westminster Ladies 1s for their first Super Saturday of the year against Birmingham University L1s at Paddington Rec. From the very start, Hampstead showed their intent, winning a penalty corner within seconds of the pushback. However, Birmingham’s goalkeeper, Evie Wood, was up to the challenge, making a crucial save to keep the game level.
Hampstead maintained constant pressure, frequently penetrating Birmingham’s D and creating multiple scoring opportunities. Despite their dominance, the scoreline remained 0-0 throughout the first quarter, thanks to Birmingham's resilient defence.
In the second quarter, Birmingham began to find their rhythm with a few breakaway chances. Hampstead’s Phoebe was crucial in defence, stepping up with brave tackles to prevent any clear shots on goal. Birmingham managed to win a penalty corner, but Hampstead goalkeeper Mim pulled off an excellent save, setting up a counter-attack down the right side of the pitch. A swift two-touch hockey move ended with Anna slotting the ball into the bottom corner from the pea spot, giving Hampstead a well-deserved 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Birmingham came out stronger in the second half, gaining more possession and looking for an equaliser. Lottie from Birmingham made several dangerous runs down the pitch, but Mim in the Hampstead goal produced a series of exceptional saves to preserve the 1-0 lead. As the game entered its final quarter, the pressure mounted, with Birmingham continuing to push for a goal. However, Hampstead's Joie remained composed in midfield, controlling the tempo and helping to secure a vital 1-0 victory.
With three points secured at Paddington Rec, Hampstead will look to build on this momentum as they face Holcombe at home next Saturday.
